One of the most common reasons for power supply failures is defective electrolytic capacitors. These capacitors contain a liquid electrolyte that - put simply - evaporates over time. The hotter the electrolytic capacitor, the faster the evaporation. Once the electrolyte has evaporated, the capacitor loses its capacitance, and the power supply can no longer operate correctly.

Failures Caused by Faulty Design

Components require a certain margin below their maximum ratings during normal operation. In technical terms, this is known as derating. Typical failures occur in transistors or metal oxide varistors. These are difficult for outsiders to trace. Some manufacturers provide reliability test reports upon request.
